• What is counselling?

Counselling is a type of talk-based therapy. At Kate Mungoven Counselling, that looks like working together to build trust and achieve your key goals for insight and change.
I use an integrative approach, drawing from holistic modalities like trauma informed care, mindfulness, somatic awareness and dynamic goal-setting to suit your individual journey.

  • How is counselling different to psychology?

Counselling focuses on your experience of mental wellbeing, ways of living and supporting your goals for meaningful change and healing.

Psychology is rooted in a medical-based model and typically focus on diagnosis of and intervention in complex mental illness.

  • What should I look for in a counsellor?

The right counsellor for you is someone who you can feel comfortable, safe and build trust with. Counselling with KMC is judgement free and confidential space which welcomes all feelings, thoughts, experiences and parts of you.

In Australia your counsellor should also be registered and aligned with industry best practices.

Kate Mungoven is a registered counsellor with The Australian Counselling Association.

  • What's the commitment?

Most clients opt for weekly or fortnightly sessions, for a duration of 8-12 sessions. This may vary depending on your goals, journey and season of life.

I recommend a regular booking to get the most from your sessions. You can choose to book one appointment at a time or several in advance.

If you would like to have a chat before committing, try a discovery call in our ‘book now’ section.

  • How much does counselling cost?

At Kate Mungoven Counselling, 15 minute discovery calls are free.

Our standard counselling appointments (50 minutes) are $140.

Long appointments (80 minutes) are $160.

Birth Preparation, Birth Debrief and Motherhood Sessions are priced accordingly, please see the services page.

The Connected Mother circle, 3 part series $135.

    Pregnancy circle - Sunday 15th October, $45

  • Can I bring my baby to the appointment?

Younger babies are welcome at face-to-face appointments. The counselling rooms are no ‘baby proofed’, however there is plenty of space for a play mat or pram. There is a ramp at the entry and lift in the lobby for easy pram access. Kate Mungoven Counselling is a breastfeeding-friendly space with baby change facilities.

You can book virtual/phone appointments if that better suits your care arrangements with older children.

  • Do you only work with mums?

The challenges to our mental wellbeing that often arise during these parenting seasons are utterly unique AND also universal. The scope of these parenting experiences therefore includes (but is not limited to) gender diverse parents, trans parents, same sex parents, single parents and foster, kinship and/or adoptive parents/carers and people trying to conceive.

I welcome you to bring your story to counselling.

Think that we are a good fit but you’re not a parent/carer? I welcome you to reach out - I am passionate about the power of therapy and supporting people in all seasons of life. I have diverse experience in many areas and would be happy to connect and see if we are a good fit.

  • Do I need a referral, mental health plan or Medicare?

Anyone can book a counselling session. You do not need a referral or GP mental health treatment plan to connect with Kate Mungoven Counselling.

Medicare rebates are not available for counselling services in Australia.

Talk to your private health care provider to find out if counselling is included in your cover.

  • Do you see couples or family groups?

Kate Mungoven Counselling specialises in working with individuals. Partners are welcome to attend certain sessions as appropriate and by prior arrangement.

I am happy to recommend couples and family counselling providers on request.
